Dulcie Taylor at Orange Inn

GOSHEN-The Folk at the Orange Inn concert series features performances by Dulcie Taylor and Iain Matthews on Saturday, Oct. 2. Taylor has recorded a new CD, "Mirrors and Windows." In a review, No Depression says "the writing is smart, witty, and heartfelt." And, according to The Washington Times, "with edgy guitar work and personally evocative lyrics, Taylor uses her voice and deeply personal lyrics to their best advantage...she sustains the spell throughout." Matthews was a founding member of Fairport Convention in 1967. He appeared on the bands' first three recordings, but musical differences caused him to leave in 1969. He felt the group's newfound traditional folk/rock direction would involve him far less than its previous contemporary work. The next two years yielded three releases for his new band, Matthews Southern Comfort, which charted a number one single in the U.K. with its version of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock." At the pinnacle of the bands' career, Matthews found success to be fulfilling but restricting. He quit to pursue a solo career. The 1970s were productive for Matthews, who released 10 more albums as both solo artist and a member of the band Plainsong. In 1978 he recorded "Stealin' Home," thought by some as Matthews' finest work. The album included the top 10 U.S. hit "Shake It." Matthews gave up making music in the 1980s. In 1986, while appearing at the annual Fairport Convention reunion in England, Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant convinced him to start again. In 1988 he recorded "Walking a Changing Line," a collection of Jules Shear compositions, and continued to write and record throughout the 1990s. In 2000 Matthews moved to Amsterdam, where he recorded "A Tiniest Wham." He released his newest CD, "Zumbach's Coat," in August, and is touring the United States, Scandinavia, Germany, the U.K., and Holland. The Orange Inn is located at 161 Main St. in Goshen.
