On Saturday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m., the Souza Scholarship for the Performing Arts and the Monroe-Woodbury Music Boosters will co-present the 30th annual Monroe-Woodbury Faculty and Friends Recital in the Monroe-Woodbury High School Auditorium.

A little background

An annual convergence of music and education, the M-W “Music Faculty Recital” was established in February 1990 to raise funds to support the Robert W. Souza Scholarship for the Performing Arts, a group formed in 1980 to bestow scholarships in memory of late Monroe-Woodbury music teacher Bob Souza.

The group produces theatrical events and this concert to raise scholarship monies for talented students.

The M-W Music Boosters was formed in July 1991 to advocate for music education at Monroe-Woodbury.

In its 28-year history, boosters’ members have made significant contributions in support of M-W’s exceptional music program, providing music scholarships, as well as equipment and other music-education support to M-W music students. Soon after this group was formed, boosters began participating in the annual faculty recital.

Between the two groups, literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded over the last 30 years. Money raised through this event will be returned to the community in the form of awards to worthy and talented music and performing arts students in Monroe-Woodbury schools, from the elementary to the high school levels.

The show does go on

This 30th anniversary show will include performances by teachers from every building in the Monroe-Woodbury School District, as well as community members, especially in the show’s finale with the Monroe-Woodbury Community Chorale.

“This year’s concert will feature songs from shows such as Godspell and Shrek: The Musical, as well as works written by influential composers ranging from Leonard Bernstein to Gustav Holst to the Rolling Stones,” noted Christopher Taborsky, Monroe-Woodbury’s District Music Coordinator. “This event will have something for everyone."
