Local Civil War veterans (1861 to 1865)

Monroe - This is the beginning of the five years of commemoration of the Civil War (1861-1866) and we will hear many presentations and programs about that war. We in Monroe may not think we were as involved as those in the South that had battles all around them, but we do have in our community the men who fought in those battles and came home to rest here. The Monroe Community Cemetery holds 19 of those men and Seamanville Cemetery holds three men. They are honored yearly on Memorial Day with flags placed at their graves by the American Legion.
