The need for speed

CENTRAL VALLEY Almost 160 girls from 26 troops in the Monroe Girl Scout Service Unit participated in the first Powder Puff Derby at Smith Clove Elementary School in Central Valley on Feb. 12, demonstrating their creativity and racing skills.
The Powder Puff Derby is modeled after the Cub Scouts popular Pinewood Derby racing event, where boys, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles.
The girls did the same. Unlike the boys event, however, many of the girls cars featured a mix of feminine chic and flashy bling.
Organizers thanked Cub Scout Pack 148 for the loan of its track and equipment as well as Boy Scout Troop 4 and the fathers who provided pit crew and track assistance. Cadette Troop 412 operated a snack bar and helped prepare the cars to allow the races to advance smoothly.
