— Richmond Boateng, a member of the Monroe-Woodbury Boys Varsity Indoor Track Team coached by Matt Hemmer, is the high school's “Athlete of the Week” for the period ending Jan. 5, Athletic Director Lori Hock announced.
Richmond, a junior, is enjoying a successful start to his 2017/18 Indoor Track and Field season.
He is a versatile athlete who specializes in long sprints and the high jump.
At the recent Coach Glynn Holiday Carnival held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, Richmond set a new personal record in the 600M run by more than 2.5 seconds. He ran an aggressive race and placed third overall after winning his heat.
Later in the meet, Richmond ran a smart leadoff leg on the 4x400m relay and put his team in a great position to earn a medal.
"His early season success has him in a great position heading into the championship meets that will be held in February," Hemmer said in the press release announcing the athlete's selection. "Beyond that he is very much in contention to earn a spot at the NYSPHSAA Championships in March."
