LATHAM — The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is proud to announce its winter 2018 Scholar-Athlete teams and individuals.
This winter, NYSPHSAA recognized 2,336 Scholar-Athlete teams and 31,072 individuals. The figures represent a 13.73 percent (282 more teams) and 5.15 percent (1,521 individuals) increase compared to the number of honorees for the winter 2017 season.
To be recognized as a Scholar-Athlete team, 75 percent of a team’s roster is required when computing a team’s average GPA, which must be 90.0 or greater.
Student-athletes with a 90.0 or greater GPA are still recognized as Scholar-Athlete recipients even if their team did not qualify for the Scholar-Athlete team award.
“Research continues to provide evidence that student-athletes perform better in the classroom when compared to their non-participating classmates. The NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete program brings attention to the benefit and impact interscholastic sports participation has upon students,” said Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA executive director. “We are very proud of this program and all of the students who excel in the classroom.”
