Monroe-Woodbury defeats NFA 48-30 in OCIAA Division 1 wrestling match

CENTRAL VALLEY — On Wednesday night, Jan. 3, the Crusaders hosted the Goldbacks of Newburgh in a OCIAA Division 1 wrestling match.
The match started at the 126 lbs. weight class where Marco Vespa got the Crusaders off to a six-point lead when he recorded a pin in 1:35.
After losing a close decision at 132 lbs., the Crusaders stormed back. Joe McGinty (138 lbs.) took :38 to pin his opponent and Julian Camporfori (145 lbs.) used all of 1:05 to get his victor and to give the Crusaders a 18-3 lead.
The Goldbacks then recorded a pin at 152 lbs. before Crusader Carter Stewart (160 lbs.) took 1:23 to record his pin.
The Godlbacks then swept the next three matches and score was tied at 24-24 as the heavyweights got ready to battle.
First David Strauss (220 lbs.) defeated Daniel Banegas in the match of the night. After battling to a 4-4 tie in regulation, David slipped to one knee in overtime. Seeing what he thought was an easy take down, his opponent charged in only to be swept off his feet and put on his back by Strauss for the victory which brought the crowd to its feet.
Then at 285 lbs. Crusader Preston Havison took a very close 2-1 to give the Crusaders a 30-24 lead in the match.
Grant Barczak (99 lbs.) closed the door on the Goldbacks by recording a pin in :48 to give the Crusaders a 36-24 lead.
The Goldbacks recorded a pin at 106 lbs. and the Crusaders won by forfeit at 113 lbs. and 120 lbs. to finish off the match.
The Crusaders took the 48-30 victory from the Goldbacks. They will take to the mats next at New Rochelle High School on Saturday, December 6 at 8:45 in a multi-team tournament.
