Woodbury Democrats to host personal safety and self-defense program on May 11

HIGHLAND MILLS — The Woodbury Democratic Committee will host an event about personal safety and self defense at the Senior Center in Highland Mills on Sunday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to come.
There is a $10 fee.
In addition to the demonstration on self defense, guest speakers from several community organizations will be present to talk about their programs and the resources they offer people who deal with issues around personal safety.
Guest speakers include:
• Officer Kristen Potter, Woodbury Police Department: She will talk about Rape Awareness Defense (RAD) for anyone vulnerable to sexual attack.
• Wendy Leccese, Mental Health Association. She will discuss teen and young adult support and the resources available to help address issues impacting our youth and young adults.
There are many resources available for teens and their families who deal with mental illness, disabilities, or who have had experience with assault.
Knowing how to find these resources can end the sense of isolation and helplessness.
• Meghan, Community Educator from Safe Homes will talk about Domestic Abuse and Violence.
• Also invited: a speaker from the Department of Adult Services to talk about Elderly Abuse.
