Monroe Police will host Citizen's Police Academy

MONROE — The Monroe Police Department will host its second Citizen's Police Academy, beginning March 14.
This program will be conducted once a week, on Wednesdays, for 12 weeks. Classes will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.

This will be the department's second Citizen’s Police Academy. The first, held last spring, had 17 graduates.
"Due to the success and popularity of the program, we encourage anyone interested to complete and submit the application as soon as possible," said Administrative Sergeant Anthony Amatetti

PurposeCommunity Oriented Policing plays an important and vital role in reducing crime. Therefore, the Monroe Police Department instituted the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) to improve communication and to obtain citizen input and support throughout the Village of Monroe.
"Attendees of the CPA will be given an opportunity to learn first-hand about the inner workings of the Monroe Police Department and will obtain a better understanding of our mission, practices and operations," Chief David Conklin said in the department's press release outline the program. "The academy gives our citizens first-hand information on how and why the Department operates, and examining the culture of police work and the organization.
"It provides an excellent opportunity for the citizens to interact with Department members," the chief added.
GoalsOne of the goals of the Citizen Police Academy is to help the residents of Monroe to better understand how policing is conducted their community.
"It is hoped that all graduates of the Citizen Academy will get to know more about the men and women who are protecting their community and learn how and why they make the decisions they do while performing their duty," Conklin said. "It is our hope that the graduates will become partners with us in identifying problems and solutions to the crime issues that are affecting our community. Graduates will gain knowledge that they can implement to enhance the quality of life in their respective neighborhoods."
Who can attend?The Monroe Police Department will consider applicants who reside or own a business in the Village of Monroe or reside in the Town of Monroe.
Individuals must be at least 21 years old and have no felony arrests. Misdemeanor or Violation arrests will be considered.
However, the Monroe Police Department reserves the right to decline any applicant based on their arrest record or negative contact with the police.
Village residents will be given preference.

• Department organization, ethics, mission, command structure/department programs and services
• Overview of the legal system - criminal/constitutional law
• Use of force - patrol procedures
• Community policing
• Detectives role: investigations, sex offender management, frauds/scams
• Firearms and K-9
• Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) Shoot/Don’t Shoot Scenarios
• Traffic/DWI enforcement/accident investigations/media relations
• Orange County Jail tour
• Ride along program
Again, the deadline to submit an application is Friday, Feb. 16.
