MONROE — The Town of Monroe Conservation Commission will host a presentation by the Monroe-Woodbury High School AP Honors Environmental Science class concerning their water quality analysis of Walton Lake
The class conducted on-site data research collection field trips and has completed preliminary findings as part its efforts to expand their educational experience beyond the classroom.
The students' fieldwork and research is supervised and directed by Monroe-Woodbury School District and their teacher, Jill Jeffrey.
The AP Environmental Science class received a grant from the Moodna Creek Watershed Intermunicipal Council to research invasive species and determine water quality in and around Walton Lake.
The students performed soil and water analysis, including the percent saturation of dissolved oxygen, nitrate concentration, turbidity, phosphate concentration, total coliform test and macro- and micro-invertebrate classification.
Commission Chairman John Ebert said in making the announcement that “I am encouraged based on the student’s preliminary results, Walton Lake appears to be a healthy lake for drinking and maintaining a stable ecosystem.”
The presentation will be made on Thursday, June 21, at 8 p.m. at the Monroe Senior Center located at 101 Mine Road.
