TUXEDO — George Grant Mason School sixth-graders have adopted trees as part of their science lessons, applying what they learned to identify them, read tree rings and study the flow of materials throughout trees.

Students in Barbara Voss’ class learned to become more aware of the aesthetic as well as environmental impact that trees have, according to school officials.

“When we lost one of our trees to Hurricane Sandy, students cleared the area of the fallen tree so that the growth of others would not be limited,” said George Grant Mason Principal Dr. Patricia Tripken. “In the spring, the students hope to replace the tree with the planting of a new sapling in the forest.”
