— On Tuesday, May 22, the Warwick Valley Local Development Corporation announced that medical marijuana producer Citiva Medical LLC had purchased eight and half acres at the former Mid-Orange Correctional facility for $526,000.
The Warwick Valley Local Development Corporation and the Town of Warwick officially took ownership of the 730-acre property at the closed prison in 2014.
Citiva Medical, LLC, a subsidiary of iAnthus Capital Holdings, Inc, is one of 10 New York State licensed medical cannabis producers.
Within two weeks the company will begin ground-breaking for Phase I of the project to include a 20,000-square-foot office and processing building and approximately 20,000-square-foot growing area. Phases II and III of the project will add an additional 40,000-square-foot of growing space.
"The use of the property will complement the agricultural heritage of our town while supporting economic development in the way of job creation and an increase in our commercial tax base," said Bob Krahulik, president of the Warwick Valley Local Development Corporation.
"We look forward to being a home to a facility that has alleviated the pain and suffering of so many New York residents," said Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton.
He added that the development, alongside John Hicks Drive, will have little traffic, low impact on the environment, produce much needed revenue for the town, increase the visibility of the remaining three parcels still available and eventually provide as many as 60 new jobs.
Sweeton also visited one of the firm's other facilities and spoke with a security director who described the company's safeguards and assured him that the Warwick site will be protected from any possible unauthorized entry.
