Catholic Charities to provide free Narcan training in Monroe on Feb. 28

MONROE — Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan will host a free Narcan training for community members on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m.
The training will be held at the agency’s Monroe clinic located at 101 Carpenter Place in Monroe.
The Narcan training is available at no cost and is recommended for parents, other loved ones and anyone closely associated with an individual suffering with a heroin/prescription opioid addiction.

Narcan, also known as naloxone, is an anti-overdose medication that inhibits the effect of a heroin/opioid overdose. It can be administered via injection or nasal spray by a lay person who has received training to carry a Narcan prescription.
Narcan training takes approximately two hours and is available to individuals 16 years or older. It is legal for a person who has been properly trained and prescribed to carry and administer Narcan. Those who do administer it to an individual believed to be suffering from an overdose are covered under the Good Samaritan Law.
