CENTRAL VALLEY — On April 17, 116 students from the Monroe-Woodbury High School Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Voice Ensemble traveled to Philadelphia, Pa., to participate in the WorldStrides Heritage Performance National Competition.

M-W musicians and their teachers, David Crone, Bonnie Glazier and Richard Regan, performed for world-class adjudicators from National Conservatories, competing against schools from across the country and Canada.

M-W brought home the top Supersweeps trophy for having the highest overall combined score. All three groups came in first in their class receiving Gold ratings and the adjudicator trophies and Charmaine-Grace Barlao received trophies for her individual performance as a violinist in the Chamber Orchestra.

All three ensembles have been invited to the Festivals of Gold to be held next year at premier performance venues across the nation.

“Once again, our teachers and students proudly represented the Monroe-Woodbury community, " Monroe-Woodbury District Music Coordinator Nicole Regan said in the district's press release announcing the program's success. "They perform beyond their years and impressed everyone they came in contact with."

Students also had the opportunity to do some sightseeing while in Philadelphia. They enjoyed the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Reading Terminal Market and the Philadelphia Hard Rock Café while in the city.
