'Women’s work’ workshop is May 17 New Windsor The Women’s Work program, a collaboration of YWCA Orange County, Jewish Family Services of Orange County, RECAP, SUNY Orange, and Cornell Cooperative Extension, will host a workshop on Tuesday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. in New Windsor. Any single mother wishing to learn more about resume and interview skills is welcome. Scholarships are still available for academic and job training programs. Women’s Work helps female heads of household identify the missing the links to financial stability and the best avenues to stable higher-paying careers. Chamber to host estate planning seminar Montgomery The Community Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County will sponsor a seminar Estate Planning Strategies: New codes, concerns and opportunities from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce Business Center. The seminar is intended for attorneys, accountants, financial planners, trust officers, wealth management advisors and their clients, nonprofit executives and individuals from throughout the region. (Accountants, attorneys, and certified financial planners receive 3 credits.) Free programs to focus on healthy eating for kids and adolescents Middletown - Crystal Run Healthcare is continuing its series of classes 'Healthy Eating, a comprehensive nutrition program designed for children and adolescents.’ The program, created and developed by Crystal Run pediatricians and registered dietitian Suzanne Meier, is intended to teach parents about healthy eating habits and proper nutrition for both children and adolescents, as well as guide young people in making healthy food choices. Meier, a certified nutritionist, along with one of Crystal Run’s pediatricians, will provide tips for reading food labels and maintaining adequate weight, as well as discuss the dangers of childhood obesity. The program will look at the recent success of a child who successfully battled obesity with the use of a customized meal plan. The sessions will be held monthly and alternate its focus between children and adolescents. The May 24 program at 5 p.m. will focus on children; the June 21 program will focus on adolescents. Children’s consignment sale set for Memorial Day weekend Chester The Two Moms Children’s Consignment Sale is set for Memorial Weekend, May 27 (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and 28 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chester. The sale brings parents together to sell their new and gently used toys, cribs, beds, strollers, high chairs, books, videos/DVDs, baby equipment, clothing (newborn-size 14), maternity wear and anything else related to babies and children. The cash-only sale will help families earn extra income and also help less fortunate families as left-over items from the sale will be donated to charity, at the seller’s approval. The sale also promotes re-using and recycling. Only items that are in excellent condition and ready to sell to the public will be sold. That means no stains, missing buttons, broken toys or missing puzzle pieces. Consignors are needed and pre-registration is required, with an insurance fee of $5. Exposures Gallery photography workshops in May Sugar Loaf Nick Zungoli’s Exposures Gallery in Sugar Loaf will hold photography workshops in May. Color Printing Workshop: May 2 (alumni only) and May 9 (first timers): One day workshops for photographers who want to learn how to make exhibition quality prints using Photoshop. The day includes a morning shoot at a Hudson Valley location and an afternoon learning Photoshop printing at the gallery. The fee for each class is $295 per person, and includes lunch, a 13 by 19-inch color print of one’s work. Classes limited to six participants. Hudson Bread Co.: Monday, May 16 A one day workshop for photographers who want to sharpen their photojournalism skills. Zungoli and New York Times Travel and Leisure photographer Chris Ramirez will lead a full day shoot at Hudson Bread, producing images for publication. Participants will learn portrait, still life and assignment photography using natural and studio lighting. Only a camera and tripod are required. A side trip will be an opportunity to make bread. Local author publishes first e-book Chester Gary Bloom of Chester has released “Olympus Union: The Past Repeated,” his first e-book in a new science fiction series. To celebrate, Bloom hosted an official launch party at Blaggard’s Pub in Manhattan. “Olympus Union” deals with the trials involved with establishing a one world government. Science fiction often assumes the long tenured existence of such a government, but “Olympus Union” examines how it gets there. The first novel speaks of rebellion, fanaticism and a prison break.
