West Point Band presents Labor Day concert on Sept. 2 with fireworks display

WEST POINT — The West Point Band will present its annual Labor Day concert on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Trophy Point Amphitheater.
In conjunction with the West Point Museum, there will be Civil War reenactors, as well as activities for the family, beginning at 1 p.m. at Trophy Point.
The concert will feature The Hellcats, the Jazz Knights and the Concert Band. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display set to the music of the West Point Band. This concert is free and open to the public.

The West Point Band’s field music group, The Hellcats, will begin the performance at 6 p.m. with a retreat ceremony.
The Jazz Knights will follow at 6:30 p.m. with several Latin selections, featuring Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi.
The Concert Band portion, beginning at 8 p.m., will be conducted by the West Point Band’s Commander, Lt. Col. Jim Keene. The Concert Band will perform several selections commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Highlighting the performance will be a pair of world premieres: Tone Poem on TAPS by Maj. Douglas Hedwig and selections from “The North and South,”a new musical by Broadway legend Charles Strouse.
The music of Strouse will also be featured on “A Strouse Celebration,” a medley of his songs arranged by the West Point Band’s Sergeant Major Douglas Richard.
Other selections include “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and the “Armed Forces Medley.”
The evening will conclude with fireworks and a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.”
