The Amity Gallery to host pianist Richard Kimball in concert on Oct. 21
WARWICK — Composer and pianist Richard Kimball will appear in concert on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Amity Gallery, 110 Newport Bridge Road in Warwick.
Kimball will be playing an original program of works in his unique style, representing his extensive background in both jazz/Brazilian and classical traditions.
He’ll premiere his new work, “Dança de Roda,” a tone poem depicting visual scenes of Brazil’s 18th century slave culture.
In “Trilogy for the Survivors” (of Hurricane Katrina), he has combined contemporary bossa nova rhythms with the classical prelude and fugue form.
He’ll also be presenting the first live performances of his eclectic work, “Calling Jobim,” based on the format of the late composer’s very popular song “Dindi” and Brazilian composer Carlos Galvaõ’s “Voô Noturno” (Night Flight).
He’ll include his own arrangements of music by several of his favorite Brazilian composers, including close longtime friend, the late Amazônian composer, Thiago de Mello – a familiar voice to Warwick audiences.
Being a longtime educator, Kimball also will offer off-the-cuff background tales and relatable descriptions of how the music is put together.
Starting time is 8 p.m. Admission is a suggested donation of $15.
The Kawaii baby grand piano he will be using has been provided by adamspiano.com of New Paltz.
