Middletown — Dr. Matthew Ally will present a lecture with PowerPoint titled “Earth in the Crucible: Sustainability as Value, Fact, and Experience” on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7:15 p.m. in Harriman Hall 111 Lecture Hall and Film Theatre on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. In this lecture, Ally explores sustainability in terms of environmental ethics, which treats sustainability as a preeminent value. He discusses how the concept of sustainability has been used, for better or for worse, to describe their goals or beliefs by policy makers, scientists, activists, business people, back-to-nature enthusiasts, and anti-environmentalists. Ally holds a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in philosophy of religion, and a PhD in moral and political philosophy. He is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the Borough of Manhattan Community College of the City of New York. The lecture is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities and is free and open to the public.
