SUNY Orange hosts 'The Past Comes Alive' art exhibit

NEWBURGH — In direct contrast with the solo exhibit of mostly abstract paintings and photographs by Mary C. Roth on view in the Mindy Ross Gallery, the Artists of Excellence series of exhibits starts off 2018 with an exhibit of decorative arts in the glass vitrine cases in the Foyer of the Mindy Ross Gallery.
The Central New York Chapter of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration is represented by four of its members whose works are precise reproductions of early 1800’s techniques in painted tinware in country and pontypool styles, stenciling, theorem, free hand bronze, pen work and reverse glass.
The Past Comes Alive exhibit is not only an art viewing; it is also a history experience.
Beauty and functionMembers of the Early American Decoration's history society honor the legacy of this art form by practicing these techniques and sharing them through exhibitions, instruction, and several well-researched books.
Early American Decoration art pieces were actually beautiful functional objects that were made by talented people to be used in the households of ordinary people.
Works on display in this show include tin trunks and boxes, coffee pots, trays, glass panels and looking glasses, a bellows, a floor cloth, and a tinsmith peddled cart made by Anne Dimock, Linda Mason, Charlie Gruman and Mary C. Roth.
ScheduleThe Past Comes Alive is on view through March 9, Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., plus during the reception on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
The show and reception are free and open to the public.
The Mindy Ross Gallery and Foyer are situated in the eastern section of the first floor of Kaplan Hall which is located at the corner of Grand and First streets on the Newburgh campus of SUNY Orange.
Free, secure parking is available in Kaplan Hall parking garage entered at 73 First St.
