Mining Monroe's history

The Monroe Historical conducted a tour on Oct. 9 of the Mombasha and O’Neil mines, along with a walk to the great walls at Indian Hills. The tour was led by Town of Monroe Historian James A. Nelson. Although the mines have not been worked since the late 1880s, they contained minerals whose values were important to people of that time: mica slate, greenstone trap, quartz and serpentine, among others, according to various historical sources. Pictured here is the group going into the Mombasha Mine.
