Goshen — Members of Song of the Valley Chorus, Sweet Adelines International, recently entertained at the Valley View Center for Nursing Care in Goshen. The audience of family members, staff and guests responded with enthusiasm to a lively performance of a cappella music, sung in the “barbershop” style. In the sing-a-long, included as a part of the program, old favorites, such as “You are my Sunshine” and “Take me Out to the Ball Game” were sung with gusto. June Pierson, one of the chorus’ assistant directors, said, “When we were children, one of the major recreations in the home was singing together. Now, as adults, we rarely sing outside of a religious setting. So, when people get a chance to sing songs from their childhood, it is a special treat.” Adding to the afternoon was a visit by a certified therapy dog, Nikky, brought to the event by her owner, Annette Smith, of Walden, who sings baritone with the chorus. Nikky rested quietly by Smith throughout the performance. Then, they moved about the room, going from one resident to another. Faces and eyes came alive as Nikky approached and, when needed, help was given to place a hand on the dog’s head. The duo are regular visitors to a number of senior residences throughout Orange County, and some of the audience members spoke of Nikky as “my dog.” Song of the Valley is looking for new members and will be offering a special holiday performance opportunity program.
