Highland Mills - The following is adapted from the electronic newsletter published each month by Woodbury Town Councilman James Skoufis. Local government Two events last month - the Memorial Day Parade and Woodbury Spring Cleaning Day - were successful both in turnout and organization. The parade committee did a great job putting together both the parade and ceremony in remembrance of all those who have given their lives in service to our country. Likewise, about 150 community volunteers came out to clean up 20 cubic yards of trash during the cleanup. Rob Weyant of the Highway Department joined the Environmental Conservation Committee and me in organizing the annual event and we’re all already looking forward to next year. In the meantime, the goal is to keep our town a clean and green one. Legal update: Orange County recently attempted to dismiss the Town and Village of Woodbury’s lawsuit against the planned automatic expansion of the Harriman Wastewater Treatment Plant every time it reaches 85 percent capacity as well as the town and village’s challenge to the county’s environmental review of sewer allocation at the plant. The county’s attempt to throw out the suit was denied by the state Supreme Court on all counts. “To be clear, we have not won the lawsuit,” wrote Councilman James Skoufis in his newsletter. “We have soundly survived the county’s attempt to dismiss it on a variety of grounds.” Consolidation update: The town and village boards sent up a home rule request to Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun and Sen. Bill Larkin earlier this year in an attempt to join the two municipalities into one. The request did not pass in the Assembly; Larkin’s bill will be discussed by his Senate committee this week. Pending a background check on the outside vendor, the Town of Woodbury has arranged for residents to be able to drop-off any unwanted electronics on Aug. 5 and 6 of this year, per the state’s new recycling law. The drop-off will take place at the Highway Department. The Town Board recently approved a local Girl Scout gold award project to construct an agility course for the dog park near Earl Reservoir. The plan looks to be completed by October or November. It’s that time of year when candidates and their supporters will be coming around town seeking petition signatures for this November’s election. To be clear, these signatures are solely to get the listed candidates on the ballot - you are not pledging support or your vote by signing. This November will feature town races for supervisor, two members of the town council and highway superintendent.
