CENTRAL VALLEY — Once in a lifetime opportunities are few and far between, but on Friday June 22, one such opportunity was presented to the graduating class of 2012 during Monroe-Woodbury High School commencement ceremonies.

There was excitement in the air as students were primed to receive their diplomas and begin the next phase of their lives. The auditorium was filled with familiar scenes and sounds: graduates streaming in, beach balls launched for a prank, words of wisdom from the principal and other guest speakers.

Then Principal David Bernsley asked for the crowd’s attention because among the class was a special graduate.

Bernsley then introduced Joseph Checa Sr. of Monroe, a World War II veteran. Like many from that generation, the nation called Joe Checa away from school for service. And he answered.

This Friday evening, though, Joe Checa was a member of the Monroe-Woodbury Class of 2012. And at the age of 91, he would share this moment with his granddaughter Diana Turnbull, who also graduated.

The crowd stood and applauded. These surviving American heroes are becoming more rare every passing day, so the crowd showed its appreciation for what World War II veterans like Joe Checa have meant to our way of life.

Joe Checa remarked how honored he felt as well-wishers congratulated and thanked him for his service.

This was a great opportunity for all in attendance to remember and be thankful.
