Post-hurricane help

You’re probably aware by now of the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, both here in town and elsewhere. Some parts of Woodbury were sadly and unfortunately hit very hard, forcing evacuations and incurring tremendous property and infrastructure damage. County Route 105 - the road that runs up next to Mario’s - for example, was eroded all the way to the double yellow line and will be closed for the foreseeable future until the county comes in to repair it. The walkway into the Central Valley Pool was also destroyed, forcing us to close the facility for the last week or so of its season. Make no mistake - we suffered through one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit our town. That said, however, the damage was contained and there were no casualties because of the yeomen efforts of our fire, police, highway department and EMS volunteers and employees. We all owe a debt of thanks to them all for keeping us safe. Likewise, Supervisor Burke and Mayor Queenan were among those local officials who stayed up very long hours in coordinating the town’s preparation and response and also deserve thanks. Like so many others, I’m committed to helping Woodburians in need however I possibly can. Please e-mail (james@skoufisforwoodbury.com) if you have a problem or issue that you believe I may be able to assist with; if you feel your insurance company is being negligent, let me know and I will try to help there as well - even if you think it’s a long shot, it can’t hurt to ask. If it’s a matter of needing a hot meal or temporary roof over your head, I’ll coordinate volunteers or community groups who will be able to help. No matter what it is, please ask. James Skoufis Woodbury Town Councilman
