The Crusaders participated in the Glen M. McGinnis Holiday Basketball Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28 at Cornwall High School.
The 2019 edition of the annual holiday tournament featured Cornwall, Wallkill, Washingtonville and Monroe-Woodbury.
The Crusaders, 2-3 on the season, looked to get back into the win column on Friday against the Wallkill Panthers in the opening round.
The two teams battled to tie score of 21 at the half, with Crusader Pablo Quinones hitting three three-point shots and scoring 11 points in the first half.
In the third quarter, the Crusaders opened a three-point led with Will Fuchs scoring eight points.
The Crusaders took over the game in the final quarter behind the scoring of Josh Castro. Castro scored 14 off his game-high 22 points in the period, many of them as he cut and slashed his way to the hoop.
Rematch against Washingtonville
The Crusaders' 53-33 victory over the Panthers set up a rematch with the Wizards, who the Crusaders defeated 10 days earlier by a score of 52-49.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the first quarter with Dan Quinones scoring four points.
The Crusaders pushed the lead to 16-4 with four minutes left in the half with Will Fuchs nailing two of his four three-point shots in game.
But that was when the wheels came off the Crusaders offense. The Crusaders were only able to score 15 more points the rest of the game as the Wizards came on.
The Wizards took the lead with 4:50 left in the third quarter and stretched it out to 13 points as they walked away with a comeback 44-31 victory.
After the game Crusader, Will Fuchs was named to the all-tournament team for his play in the two-day tournament.
The Crusaders' loss brought their record to 3-4 on the season. Their next game will be on Tuesday, Jan. 7, when they travel to Newburgh Free Academy to face the Goldbacks.
