Newburgh. M-W overwhelms NFA 62-24 in girls basketball

On Friday the 13th, the Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Newburgh to face the Goldbacks in a league match up.

The Crusaders entered the game with a 5-4 record after beating Cornwall 60-28 in their last game. The Goldbacks entered the game with a 0-8 record after losing 53-32 to Kingston in their last game.

The Goldbacks surprised the Crusaders and got off to 4-0 lead before the Monroe-Woodbury woke up. With 3:09 left in the first quarter, Madison Fileen stole the ball and scored to put the Crusaders up 5-4 and they never looked back.

The Crusaders edged to 12-8 lead in the first quarter with Olivia Shippee scoring three of her seven points in the game.

In the second quarter, the Crusaders took control of the game with Madison Fileen scoring 10 of her game-high 21 points in the game. She was on target from long range as she hit five three-point shots in the game.

The Crusaders kept the offense running in the third quarter with Arianna Exarchakis scoring five of her 12 in the game.

The Crusaders took a 52-21 lead into the fourth. In the final quarter Sienna Feeley scored six more points as the Crusaders ran away with a 38-point victory.

The 62-24 victory brings the Crusaders’ record to 6-4 on the season.
