M-W Girls Cross County team begins defense of Section 9 title

Washingtonville. Girls defeat Goshen and Washingtonville in three-school meet; boys split contests, besting Goshen but narrowly losing to Washingtonville.

On sunny Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 17, the Crusaders Girls and Boys Cross Country teams traveled to Washingtonville High School to face the Wizards and the Goshen Gladiators in a three-team meet.

The Crusader Girls team coached by Chris Goodwin looks to defend the team's Section 9 championship again this fall. And they are off to a great start.

The Crusaders Girls team defeated the Gladiators 25-30 and topped the Wizards 18-39.

Kayla Schram of Goshen took first with a time of 18:45.41 over the three-mile course.

The Crusaders were led by Cameryn Cain, who finished second, and then Leah Smith, Evelyn Gonzalez-Valle and Mia Sisilli, who finished fourth, fifth and sixth to place four runners in the top 10 to win both meets.

The boys team coached by James Glover looks to challenge Warwick for the section crown this year. The boys split their meet by beating the Gladiators 20-42 but then loosing a close one to the Wizards 27-29.

Andrew Johnson of Goshen finished first with a time of 16:12.27, edging out Crusader Brian Whitfield, who was just six seconds behind over the three-mile course.

The other top ten Crusaders were Andrew Yi (fourth), Nicholas Howell (sixth) and Tyler Anderson (tenth).

The Crusader Cross Country teams will in action again on Saturday when they participate in an invitational meet at Bear Mountain State Park.
