Central Valley. Crusaders slay Dragons in lacrosse

Last Wednesday, May 5, at Monroe-Woodbury High School, the Crusaders hosted the Dragons of Cornwall in a non-league lacrosse match.

The Crusaders jumped to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter with Thomas Concannon scoring twice and CJ Gullotta adding a score for Monroe-Woodbury.

In the second quarter, the Crusaders stretched their lead to five with Jake Caprara adding two goals and Brett Werling putting one into the net.

With the half time score at 6-1, it looked as though the Crusaders were in control of the game.

But the Dragons woke up at half time and took control of the third quarter, scoring five straight goals to tie the game.

The Crusaders Timothy Philbin put an end to the Dragon run when he scored with little over a minute left in the third period to retake the lead 7-6.

In exciting fourth quarter action the Crusaders and Dragons exchanged goals and leads with Concannon scoring again.

Crusader Colin Duffy came through with the game on the line to tie the score with 3:40 left in the game and force it into overtime.

The Crusaders won the the overtime face off and put the ball into the Dragons defensive zone. With 2:10 left in the overtime period Concannon broke past the Dragon defender and beat the goalie with a bullet for the win.

After letting a five-goal halftime lead slip away, the overtime goal set off a Crusader sideline celebration.

The Crusaders victory brings their record to 2-0 on the season.
