Straus Newspapers recognized for excellence in reporting and design

Straus News’ publications were recognized for excellence in reporting and design at the New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest Awards ceremony held virtually April 8 and 9.

Reporter Hanna Wickes won first place as New York State’s Rookie Reporter of the Year.

The Photo News won first place for coverage of education. The judges commented about Becca Tucker, Molly Colgan and Hanna Wickes’ stories: “Well-written series of articles with informative interviews. Kudos to the reporters behind the articles.”

The Warwick Advertiser won second place for its coverage of Election and Politics. The judges said: “This entry included a strong collection of political stories. I especially enjoyed the look into purple marriages. The articles were well written and interesting.”

The Chronicle won first place for coverage of agriculture and the judges said about Becca Tucker’s writing: “This writer tackles the most important agricultural stories of 2020 with rich detail and strong writing.”

Becca Tucker’s and Hanna Wickes’ coverage of Health, Healthcare and Science in the Warwick Advertiser tied for third place. Judges said “strong headlines that pull readers to stories that matter to them. Facts are presented in a clear concise manner.”

Becca Tucker’s story about “purple” marriages won honorable mention in the Feature Story category.

The papers’ design department also took home numerous awards.

Straus News Design Director Christina Scotti won first place in Best Advertising Campaign for the ads she designed for Battinelli & Co. The judges said: “Beautiful. Excellent photos. Excellent composition. Excellent understated seasonal artwork. This is good.”

The Warwick Advertiser won third place for Best Small Space Ad and Honorable Mention for Graphic Illustration.

“We know our team has been doing important and impactful work over the past year,” Publisher Jeanne Straus said. “We’re incredibly gratified that our top notch professionals are getting the recognition they deserve.”
