Central Valley: COVID-19 makes traditional graduation for M-W Class of 2020 impossible

In a letter to Monroe-Woodbury High School graduates and their families, Superintendent of School Elsie Rodriguez announced that the district will not be holding a traditional graduation ceremony on July 31.

“Per social gathering guidelines set forth by Governor Cuomo due to COVID-19, the maximum number of attendees (graduates, guests and staff) at an outside gathering remains in effect at 150,” Rodriguez wrote. “This guidance has not been updated or revised since it was introduced in mid-June. Historically, M-W graduations have almost 2,000 attendees. The M-W Class of 2020 is simply too large for us to reasonably accommodate a traditional graduation ceremony.

“We hope that you and your family enjoyed the series of events and activities held in your honor during May and June to recognize your accomplishments,” she added. “District leaders could not be more proud of this graduating class and how you handled these challenging times with grace and resilience. I am confident you will face your next steps with the same courage and determination.

“You will forever be part of the Monroe-Woodbury family.”
