UrbanXtracts, one of the first licensed hemp cultivators and processors in the State of New York, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 21, with the Warwick Valley Local Development Corporation and key stakeholders to celebrate the opening of its first local hemp manufacturing facility in Warwick.
The state-of-the-art 18,000-square-foot facility is located within the business park built on the former grounds of the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility.
“The opening of UrbanXtracts’ Processing and Development Center within our new business park is a cornerstone of our hemp industry development strategy” said Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton.
UrbanXtracts CEO Eran Sherin added: “We look forward to writing a new chapter in this property’s history and contributing to the hemp industry by providing the needed infrastructure and compliance standards.”
He reported that UrbanXtracts has spent the last three years building a vertically integrated supply chain. The company offers proprietary hemp genetics supplied to local farmers for production, as well as manufacturing partnerships with developers and brands.

New York State’s anticipated promulgation of new food and beverage regulations will allow the company to formulate a previously unattainable sector of products. Not only will the company produce bulk cannabinoid products, but also provide the space for brands and developers to utilize a seed-to-sale infrastructure to manufacture New York compliant products.
Shrin believes that with evolving laws and driving demand, the New York hemp and cannabis market has the potential to fulfill the vision of developing a thriving industry within the state.

Economic development in Warwick: From dairy to hemp
In July 2011, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office announced that the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility in Warwick was on its list of seven prisons to be shut down to save the state money. And in 2014, the State of New York approved the transfer of the property to the Warwick Valley Local Development Corporation and the Town of Warwick.
From the beginning the Warwick Town Board’s objectives in acquiring the former prison were to create Warwick’s first and only business park that would produce tax revenues and provide jobs.
A 2018 Farm Bill removed Cannabidiol, known as CBD, from the Controlled Substances Act, creating new opportunities for New York farmers and businesses.
And since that time several hemp and CBD processing facilities have purchased sites on the former prison property, which Supervisor Michael Sweeton once described as the rise of a potential Town of Warwick industry and farming relationship similar to its dairy industry.
