On Monday, May 20, veteran John Peter Hastings, a World War II Army Sergeant, Unit F Company, 414th Infantry, 104th Infantry Division, received an Honor Salute from Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties with the assistance of Richard Drago, Commander of The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1782, Carol Parlatore and Al Boltz from Washingtonville VFW Post 8691.

A Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient, Hastings received the veterans who came to pay tribute to him for his service to the country.

A plaque, rosary beads and a blanket

Rich Drago presented a special Purple Heart plaque, along with a certificate of service, provided by Hospice along with a "We Honor Veterans Hospice" pin.

Carl Parlatore was so moved by the salute, he offered Hastings his very own combat rosary beads.

“I felt The Lord tell me to give them to him, and so I did," Parlatore said. "It was very special.”

Al Bolt presented and read a card from a child thanking him for his service.

“I’ve been a part of other ceremonies, but this one was different," said Bolt.

A patriotic blanket made by a local community crafter was also presented by Hospice Social Worker Donna Deming.

When his daughter Joan put on his uniform cap, Hastings was ready for his Honor Salute.

And with tears in his eyes, he saluted back.

Thank you for your service.
