Assemblyman Colin Schmitt has a small business of the month appreciation program that he launched at the beginning of his term.
The program is designed to show appreciation for a local small business in his district each month.
For the month of May he recognized Flowers by David Anthony, located at 516 NY-32, Highland Mills, to be the Small Business of the Month.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy," Schmitt said in the press release announcing the selection. "Our communities thrive when local businesses succeed. I am proud to recognize Flowers by David Anthony in Woodbury as the Small Business of the Month for May. David, Julie and the entire Flowers by David Anthony team not only create beautiful flower arrangements but also have strong history in Woodbury and our entire region.”
The award offered Anthony the occasion to talk about his interests.
The love, the growth the challenges of the business
“I have always loved flowers," he said. "When I was young, I would help my mom in her garden and my love for flowers blossomed from there. I’ve been a professional florist for more than 30 years, beginning in a local flower shop, then as a designer for a New York City florist. I ventured out on my own and began my wedding flower business.
"I made the Hudson Valley my home after meeting my beautiful wife," Anthony added. "Five kids, a grandson, countless happy couples, and almost a quarter century later, Flowers by David Anthony has grown to be the flower shop I have always dreamed of owning.
Florist farmers
" I pride myself on the personal attention I give all our clients from the moment I meet with a couple, to their wedding day, designing and creating the wedding decor they have imagined and more.
"Always growing and changing with the times, we have begun our next adventure as florist farmers, and will be growing flowers for our shop and our weddings," Anthony said. "With my wife by my side and the best team in the business, I’m looking forward to a future even more exciting than our past."
Frank Palermo, Woodbury Town Supervisor, offered his thanks to the assemblyman for his support of the community.
"I am happy to join him here today to recognize Flower’s by David Anthony as Small Business of the Month for May," he added. "Congratulations to David Anthony on his 25th anniversary in business.”
Likewise Andrew Giacomazza, Village of Woodbury Trustee, noted the role small businesses have within the community.
"It is so important that we honor local and small businesses and highlight the contributions that they make," he said.
