Monroe-Woodbury finishes second at Section 9 wrestling championships

CENTRAL VALLEY — Fifteen teams with more than 240 wrestlers took part in the Section 9 Division 1 Wrestling Championships, held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8 and 9, at the Monroe-Woodbury High School.

Minisink Valley won the team title with 292 points. The Crusaders finished second with 227 points, followed by Newburgh Free Academy with 173 points.

The Crusaders placed 12 wrestlers in the top six in the 15 weight classes.

Crusaders Richie Toledo (99 lbs.), Jack Kohrs (120 lbs.) and Ryan Burgos (126 lbs.) all finished sixth in their weight class.

Rob Estevez took fifth at 138 lbs. while Dylan Winters came in fourth at 106 lbs.

Taking third place for the Crusaders were Santos Ocasio (113 lbs.), Steven Felice (170 lbs.) and David Strauss (220 lbs.).

The Crusaders placed four wrestler into the finals:

• In one of the biggest upsets of the year, undefeated three-time Section 9 Champion Crusader Marco Vespa lost to Nick Picariello of Minisink Valley 6-2 to finish second at 120 lbs.

• At 285 lbs. Crusader Preston Havison battled Adam Fenner of Minisink Valley but lost an exciting match 4-3 to finish second.

• Crusader Joe McGinty controlled Nick Florin of Pine Bush to take the 152 lbs. title 6-0.

• Sam Santander wasted little time pinning Hayden Barley of Kingston in 1:00 to capture the 195 lbs. weight class for the Crusaders.

Joe McGinty and Sam Satander will represent the Crusaders at the state finals in two weeks.

Marco Vespa and Preston Havison may also recive at large bids to the state finals also.
