MaxPreps recognizes Monroe-Woodbury's two state champion soccer teams

CENTRAL VALLEY — At half time of the boys varsity basketball game last Wednesday, Jan. 16, both Crusaders soccer teams received special recognition for their successful seasons.

MaxPreps, the national high school sports website, picked the two Crusader soccer squads out of 16,000 high school teams in the country.

To qualify for the award, a team must win a state championship and be nationally ranked.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team finished the season with a 19-1-1 record. The team beat the Bethlehem Eagles 1-0 to win the NYSPHSAA State Title and finished the season ranked 30th in the nation.

The Boys Varsity Soccer team finished the season with a remarkable 21-0 record. The team beat the Red Devils of Clarence 2-0 to win the NYSPHSAA State Championship 2-0 and finished the season ranked ninth in the country.

On Wednesday night, Girls Head Coach Bill Mpasiakos was presented the award by the Army National Guard at half court. He then turned and handed it the team as they received applause from the crowd.

Boys Head Coach Ken Clearwater then received the award at half court and he, too, handed it over to his team as they enjoyed their moment of recognition.

Congratulations to the two Crusader soccer teams on their championship seasons and thank you to MaxPreps and the Army National Guard for giving special recognition to an amazing group of Crusader athletics.
