The South Orange Family YMCA: 'A place to go and always feel welcome'

Dear Mayor Dwyer and Village Board:

I am writing this letter to share with you the importance of the South Orange Family YMCA. Although many people think of it as a gym, it is so much more.

The "Y" is a place that welcomes everyone and displays a wonderful sense of community.

My daughter is physically disabled, I came to the Y and asked is there anything that she could possibly do to make her feel part of something.

In a heartbeat, I was told have her come in and volunteer with one of the coaches. Although her abilities were limited she developed confidence and felt wonderful about herself being able to volunteer.

Several years have passed, and now she refers to SOFY as her other family. She volunteers often at the many events open to the community, such as Healthy Kids Day, Halloween Event, Family Nights and Santa Day.

The South Orange Family YMCA also has welcomed the Young Men and Women from her Day Hab Program, AHRC in free weekly to utilize the facility.

I also know that they open their doors for many other people and other organizations.

The Y has given my daughter a feeling of belonging and being part of her community, a place that she can go to and always feel welcome. I will always have a special place in my heart for the South Orange Family YMCA for seeing my daughter as an individual with potential for impacting her community and allowing her the opportunity to shine.

Felice Cicchesi
