— Two new volunteers were seated as full members of the Monroe Free Library Board of Trustees at the annual election and meeting on Jan. 14.

Stepping in for two members whose terms had expired are Carol Connell Cannon and Patricia Asprea-Wright, both longtime residents of Monroe.

Cannon has a Master of Library Science degree from Rutgers and is the director of the Suffern Free Library.

Asprea-Wright is a registered nurse whose background includes clinical research collections for the NY Blood Center and neonatal intensive care.

“I am delighted to have such well-qualified, pro-library people with us, who are excited to be on the board," said Library Director Marilyn McIntosh.

Three sitting officers were re-elected to serve another term, including Patricia Shanley as the board’s president, Charles LeViseur as vice president and Casey Auerbach as treasurer.

Barbara Cullum volunteered to fill the vacant Recording Secretary seat.

Trustees who also continue to serve on the board include Donna Deming, Gil Goetz and Terry Schommer.

“Our trustees are an active and involved group of people,” Shanley said, “and we have trustees who continue to work well together and have fun doing it.”

The projects that involved the board in 2018 included a new “Music at the Library” series of three performances; setting up table at the Farmer’s Market; grant writing and bake sale fund raisers, plus an ongoing initiative called “Basket of Books,” with bins of free books placed at various locations around town.

In 2019, the board hopes to firm up plans to revive the Book Garden building next door, and get it open to the public again.

The Library's Board still has two open seats and is seeking applicants who would like to help.

Anyone who would like more information or is interested in serving can call the library at 783-4411 and leave contact information for the board’s nominating committee chair.
