Shirley Goldberg of Harriman passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh. She was soon to be 93 years old.

The daughter of Benjamin Apfel and Betty Messinger-Apfel, she was born in New York City, lived in the Bronx and later grew up on the Lower East Side where she met her husband Harry Goldberg.

Her family's statement reads: “A strong, loyal, true to her word woman, she was completely devoted to her family, supportive in every way. She loved playing card games and was quite the card shark. She was up for any adventure, for which she took many with family and friends. Shirley always maintained a positive outlook, accepting whatever life threw at her. She lived life fully, always kind and always there to lend a hand. Humble and gracious, a true lady at all times.”

Shirley is survived by her loving family: daughter and friend, Madelyn Goldberg; granddaughter and best buddy, Jennifer Phillips-Carrillo and her husband Uno; great granddaughter and the light of her life, Kaia Alexandra; grandchildren Joshua and Marissa Goldberg; brother Robert Apfel and his wife Sheila, their two sons, wives and children; sister-in-law Florence Apfel, her two sons and daughter; and loving niece Shelley Goldberg, along with great nieces, nephews, cousin Mildred Gorenstein and dear friends.

Shirley was predeceased by her son David Lee Goldberg and her brother Irving Apfel.

The family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. Marina Keller, Dr. Petr Bezdicek, Dr. Salvatore Devincenzo (for all your caring), Dr. Nessarios, the medical staff and nurses at Orange Regional Medical Center, and a very special thank you to the entire staff at the Kaplan Hospice Residence. Your warmth and compassion was so appreciated.

A Celebration of Shirley’s Life was held Jan. 6 at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home in Monroe.

The family sat Shiva on January 6 and 7 at the residence of Jennifer and Uno Carrillo in Harriman.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Arrangements by Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home (845-782-8185; www.ssqfuneralhome.com).
