CENTRAL VALLEY — On Wednesday night, the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders hosted the John S. Burke Catholic Eagles.

The Crusaders entered the game with a 4-3 record while the Eagles were still looking for their first victory of the season.

Burke got off to 19-17 first quarter lead, but Will Fuchs' two three-point shots kept the Crusaders close.

In the second quarter Crusader Josh Castro came off the bench and got the team going by scoring six points as the Crusaders caught and then surged ahead of the Eagles 33-29.

After the break Castro continued his assault as he scored 11 of his game-high 19 points as the Crusaders jumped out to a 54-36 lead.

His energy and quick, explosive drives to the basket have given the Crusader offense a real boost so far this season.

In the fourth quarter Conor Coffey hit a three-pointer as the Crusaders cruised to a 69-44 victory.

The victory marked a milestone in Head Coach Dave Powers' career: his 500th victory.

Powers has coached at Immaculate Heart, Nanuet and Tuxedo and is a member of the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.

This is his third year as head coach at Monroe-Woodbury.

The Crusaders' next game will be at home Friday night against Newburgh Free Academy.
