NYSPHSAA announces Fall 2018 Scholar-Athlete teams and individuals

— The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has announced its fall 2018 Scholar-Athlete teams and individuals.

This is the 27th year the NYSPHSAA has conducted the Scholar-Athlete program, which is sponsored by Pupil Benefits Plan, Inc.

This fall, NYSPHSAA recognized 3,444 Scholar-Athlete teams and 46,549 individuals. The number of Scholar-Athlete teams increased by 71 compared to fall 2017. A total of 632 schools across the state participated in the Scholar-Athlete program.

“We would like to congratulate our student-athletes and member schools,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “We are extremely proud of this program which recognizes the student-athletes who excel in the classroom. We continue to see what hard working and dedicated student-athletes we have in New York each season and this shows how much NYSPHSAA student-athletes are committed to their education.”

Scholar-Athlete teamsTo qualify as a Scholar-Athlete team, 75 percent of a team’s roster must have an average GPA of 90 or above.

Monroe-Woodbury High School qualified as a Scholar-Athlete team in the following sports:

• Boys Cross Country

• Boys Soccer

• Football

• Girls Cross Country

• Girls Soccer

• Girls Swimming and Diving

• Girls Tennis

• Girls Volleyball

George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo qualified as a Scholar-Athlete team in girls volleyball.

Scholar-Athlete individualsAll student-athletes on the team who earned an individual GPA of 90 or above are considered Scholar-Athlete individuals.

If a team did not qualify for the award, student-athletes who earned an individual GPA of 90 or above are still recognized as Scholar-Athlete individuals.

Monroe-Woodbury High School qualified the following number of Scholar-Athletes by team:

Boys Cross Country: 47

Boys Soccer: 18

Football: 21

Girls Cross Country: 34

Girls Soccer: 18

Girls Swimming and Diving: 33

Girls Tennis: 13

Girls Volleyball: 10

Nine members of the George F. Baker High School Girls Volleyball team qualified as Scholar-Athletes.
