SYRACUSE — The Orange County 4-H Tardigrade Club, which includes Monroe-Woodbury students, were participants in the recent 4-H State Robotics Challenge in Syracuse, which featured a "natural disaster" theme.

The mission was to solve several natural disaster-related challenges by programming a robot to complete tasks related to clearing debris from a home, building a generator, moving people and pets to the emergency shelter.

The “Robo K.O.A.R.S” and “Cyberstormers” robotics teams took home the highest score of the robotics challenge award in their division and on the days they competed.

Additionally, there was also a maze challenge where Robo K.O.A.R.S won the Robot Explorer Prize, given to the team who explored the most of the maze. Cyberstormers won the fastest maze time.

Each team programmed its robot to complete tasks in two and a half minutes, which included clearing the way of debris, moving food and medical supplies, moving a wagon with supplies through downed power lines, and putting lights on a path to lead the way to the shelter.

Each team developed its own robot design and programming.

The Robo K.O.A.R.S team is comprised of Om Naik, Shreya Girish, Rohan Sonakya and Kushi Girish while the Cyberstormers team is Abhilash Patel, Arnav Sinha, Praveen Jegan, Ronan Patel and Ashok Sathyamoorthy.

Parents who are 4-H volunteers led each team by organizing practices and serving as a resource.

The 2018 4-H Robotics Challenge tasks were designed to encourage children to learn more about natural disasters, how people recover and safety while applying a robotic application to their learning.
