MONROE — More than 50 children and parents gathered at Rockin’ Mountain Honey in Monroe on Sunday to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Rockin' Mountain Honey is organic honey made in the Hudson Valley, specifically on Schunemunk Mountain in southern Orange County.

The children’s eyes grew wide as they watched their host, dressed in head-to-toe protection, extract honey from a live bee hive. You could hear the squeals of joy and excitement as the children were given their own honey jars to fill with the freshly extracted honey.

Apples dipped in honey are a traditional food eaten at Rosh Hashanah. The sweetness of the apples and honey symbolizes the wish for a sweet new year.

This year, Rosh Hashanah began on Sunday night and was celebrated on Monday and Tuesday.

“The sweetness of the honey was matched by the sweet smiles on the kids faces today,” said Rabbi Rachel Rubenstein, Director of Education at the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County. “We provide fun and dynamic Jewish programming year-round, throughout Orange County, and watching the parents and children interact and start to form friendships and community with one another is what this is all about!”

The families were gathered as part of the PJ Library program, a program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County, and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
