PINE BUSH — On Friday night, Sept. 7, the Crusaders traveled to Pine Bush High School to face the Pine Bush Bushmen in a OCIAA AA Division varsity football game.

The Crusaders dropped their opening game to Aquinas Institute; the Bushmen were also looking for their first victory of the season, having lost Cornwall last Friday.

First quarter

The Crusaders struck first when Steve Campione hit Jack Dembia over the middle for an 80-yard touchdown pass.

The Bushmen stormed back and tied the score on a five-yard touchdown run.

Second quarter

In the second quarter, offensive tackle Jayden Prina lined up in the Crusader backfield and took a hand off and bulled his way through the Bushmen line to put his team back on top 14-7.

But the pesky Bushmen and their run-oriented offense answered when they punched the ball in from the one-yard line with 6:02 left in the half to tie the score at 14-14.

For the second game in a row, the Crusaders executed another perfect two-minute drill. The drive was capped off with 12 second left when Campione hit Dembia with a four-yard score and when Mickey Boyle hit the third of his five PATs in the game for a 21-14 Crusader lead.

Fourth quarter

In the fourth quarter, Campione connected on his third touchdown pass of the game when Peter Mastropolo made a beautiful diving catch with a Bushmen defender on his back in the corner of the end zone. That put the score at 28-14.

Brandon Wasley finished off the Crusader scoring when broke free for a seven-yard touchdown run with 8:14 left in the game.

The Crusaders 35-14 victory over the Bushmen brings their record to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in OCIAA AA Division play.

The Crusaders will face the Kingston High School Tigers at home on Friday night at 7 p.m.
