— The Town of Monroe will hold its first Community Day on Saturday, June 16, to honor the town’s first responders.

The festivities will take place between 2 and 8 p.m. at Mombasha Town Park, located at 405 West Mombasha Road.

Monroe Town Councilman Sal Scancarello is organizing the event with the help of Ann Marie Morris, chairwoman of the Monroe Joint Park Rec Commission.

The day will feature live music and food trucks offering such savory items as lobster rolls, tacos, brick oven pizzas as well as hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage and peppers.

But most important, Scancarello said, will be in recognizing the role of the 100 or so men and woman who serve as firefighters, ambulance corps members and police play within the community.

“First responders are integral to our lives,” the councilman said. “Imagine what this community would be without them. They are the community’s heart and soul.”

Scancarello said Mombasha Park was chosen as the site for Community Day because “we really wanted to showcase the natural beauty of Mombasha Park and we want to make sure our residents get to enjoy it.”

The park, he added, is not just for active recreation, such as leagues, but for passive recreation like hiking as well.

“I am surprised this hasn’t been done before,” Scancarello said. “We are proud to honor our local emergency services. They are so important to our community.”
