CENTRAL VALLEY — The Monroe-Woodbury Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team, which is participating in OM world competition later this month, continues its fund-raising efforts in a partnership with Uno Pizzeria and Grill of Central Valley.

Uno’s is donating 20 percent from each patron check this month to assist the team in raising the $10,000 needed to make the trip to Iowa State University through May 24.

That amount covers transporting the team and props to Iowa, room and board for five days and associated registration fees.

OM Coordinator and District Gifted/ Talented Coordinator Debra Garling estimated the group needs to raise about 10 percent to 15 percent more for the trip.

Teams that place second are technically invited to participate in the world finals. So through fund raising and parent support, the teams can opt to go. That’s because the district’s longtime policy is to pay for first place teams to attend world competition, the only international competition the district participates in annually.

This is the first time in the district’s history that only a second-place team has qualified for world finals.

Coupons are needed in order for funds to be donated to the team. Those interested can email Garling at dgarling@mw.k12.ny.us for a digital coupon.
