— Monroe-Woodbury Athletic Director Lori Hock announced that Andrew Salkin, a member of the Monroe-Woodbury Boys Varsity Tennis team coached by Anita Wilson, is the “Athlete of the Week” for the period ending April 13.
Andrew is a senior, and this is his third year on the Varsity Tennis team. He is also captain this year.
"The regular season has just begun and Andrew has earned the most competitive spot in our lineup this year - he is representing the Crusaders as our first singles player," Wilson said in the press release announcing the athlete's selection. "Andrew’s game has improved once again this year, which is evidence of the time he has spent in the off season, practicing and working on his game."
Andrew won his first match this season. He lost his second match to a seasoned international player, but he played very well under the circumstances.
"Andrew plays hard and smart and portrays a calm attitude," his coach said. "He is not afraid to take chances to win a point and that is an important quality in the game of tennis.
"In addition, his calm demeanor on the court is a very difficult attitude to maintain in tennis," Wilson added. "Many players, even the professional ones, find difficulty doing this."
Last year, Andrew represented Monroe-Woodbury at the county tennis tournament as a singles player.
He aspires to once again represent his team in the post-season tournaments this year.
"I am impressed with the dedication Andrew has shown to tennis," Wilson said. "His time and effort has provided Andrew with the skills needed to be successful in tennis.
"Overall, Andrew is a hard working athlete and a dedicated part of the Crusader’s Boys Tennis Team," the coach added. "I am happy to have him as part of our team again this year, and I look forward to continuing to see him grow in the future.'
