Monroe-Woodbury finishes second at Section 9 wrestling championship

Sam Santander, Dylan Earl and Marco Vespa earn section titles

CENTRAL VALLEY — Monroe-Woodbury High School hosted the Section 9 Division 1 Wrestling Championships last Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9 and 10.

More than 200 wrestlers representing 14 school districts took part in the two-day event with the winners going to Albany on Feb. 23-24 for the state finals.

The Minisink Valley Warriors took home the team title with a score of 312.5. The Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders finished second with 209.5 and Newburgh Free Academy came in third with a score of 163.

Crusaders Carter Stewart (152 lbs.) and Jake Minnies (120 lbs.) both wrestled back to finish third in the tournament.

The Crusaders were able to get five wrestlers into the finals on Saturday night.

Crusader Joe McGinty (138 lbs.) came in second when he dropped a 15-4 decision to Dom Vetrano of Minisink Valley.

Then at 195 lbs., Crusader Sam Santander captured first place with a close 3-1 decision over Anton Juncaj of Minisink Valley.

Crusader Preston Havison received the Patrick Michael Daliso award for most improved wrestler before the start of the finals on Saturday. He then went out and lost a hard fought 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker match to Andrew Fenner of Minisink Valley. Their contest was voted the most exciting match of the finals.

Crusader Dylan Earl repeated as a Section 9 champion as he moved up to 113 lbs. and defeated Jordan Suarez from Minisink Valley with a 7-3 decision.

Finally Crusader Marco Vespa captured his third Section 9 title as he recorded a 22-6 Tech Fall victory over Bryan McDougall of Warwick.
