— Monroe resident Steven Chanat, a senior at Monroe-Woodbury High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 340, recently earned Eagle Scout status, the highest achievement in Boy Scouts.

Chanat selected his parish, St. Anastasia in Harriman, to be the beneficiary of his service project. He envisioned the transformation of an unused piece of property into a memorial paver patio where parishioners and community members could meditate, remember loved ones or hold outdoor church services.

With the help of local businesses, family, friends, and troop members, Chanat planned and executed the project.

Chanat is active in his troop, having attended and completed NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) and served as the troop librarian, a patrol leader, the assistant senior patrol leader and the troop guide. He has earned 40 merit badges, including the 12 required for the rank of Eagle Scout.

In addition, he has also earned the Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII and International Awareness Emblem religious emblems. He has been recognized by his peers and elected into the Order of the Arrow (OA), scouting’s National Honor Society. While in the OA, Chanat served as the chapter chief of the Delaware District and chairman of the training committee for the Nacha Nimat Lodge.

Chanat plans to study biology in college is considering future pre-med or pre-vet coursework.

Only four percent of all scouts meet the requirements necessary to become an Eagle Scout.

Chanat will be recognized at an Eagle Court of Honor in the spring.
