    Walter H. Smith Jr., a longtime resident of the Monroe area, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019. He was 88 years old.
    The son of Walter H. Smith, and Lucille Charlotte Smith, he was born in Hackensack, N.J., on Jan. 20, 1931.
    After graduating from Monroe High School, he served in the Korean War with the Army Aviation Engineers and then studied Electronic Engineering and graduated from the RCA Institutes.
    He was a retired computer systems analyst for IBM in Franklin Lakes, N.J., and a Computer Systems Engineer Consultant for ARMS Inc. He had many hobbies including gardening, radio controlled models, wood working, wine-making, and making home video DVD’s on his computer.
    He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Helen I. Nagy Smith, and grandson Shawn Walter Hiner.
    Surviving are his four children: Jeffrey Smith and wife Carol, of Modena, Gail Jackson and husband Rick of Quakertown, Pa., Susan Cozart, of Monroe and Stephanie Hiner and husband Christopher of Monroe; two sisters: Lucille M. Smith of Hudson, Fla., and Barbara Aughe and husband Phillip of New Port Richey, Fla. He was affectionately known as “Pop Pops” by his nine grandchildren: Samantha Riley, Corey Smith, Meaghan Jackson, Lindsay Jackson, Kyle Cozart, Chelsea Cozart, Christopher Hiner, Shannon Hiner and Cassie Hiner and great grandchild Casey Riley.
    Visitation was held Feb. 14 at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home in Monroe.
    A Chapel Service was held in the funeral home on Feb. 15 officiated by the Rev. Claire Lofgren.
    Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
