CENTRAL VALLEY — It may not look like it outside but spring is just around the corner and that means Crusader baseball.
The Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Baseball team is poised to start the 2018 season in a few short weeks.
Leading the Crusaders this year will be returning All-State players third baseman Drew Jemison and right-handed pitcher Nick Rivera.
Chris Vero begins his fifth year as head coach and along with his assistants William Beyer and Jim Hahn they are very pleased with the work ethic being displayed by the team thus far.
“We have a big squad of 20 young men who play the game of baseball the right way," Vero said. "They hustle, they are coachable, they have a selfless approach, are willing to do the tedious detail work needed to have a competitive team and they also have a lot of fun playing ball.
"We have seven returning players from the 2017 team and 13 newcomers onto the varsity team," the head coach added. "The coaching staff feels that as the season progresses the team will continue to improve and hopefully be playing our best Crusader brand of ball come late May.”
The regular season opener is scheduled for April 4 at Highland High School.
The Crusaders finished up last season 15-6 and ranked 16th in the state.
